What is the doyouspeak.com Online Classroom?

The Online Classroom is the unique multimedia interface which makes the lessons so interesting and memorable. Students speak to their teacher (and other students in a group lesson) using telephone or Skype and at the same time look at their computer screen where the lesson materials are displayed. The teacher works through the lesson showing a variety of learning content such as short video clips, songs, photos and text.

Can I choose when to study?

Yes, you are able to select English lesson times that suit you. Once you have booked a course of lessons you then go through to your own account page and schedule your lesson times from there. We have a large number of qualified English teachers available to teach your English lessons.

Can I see an example lesson?

Yes, we have created a short video which gives an overview of a DoYouSpeak lesson. This can be seen on the lesson video page.

Are DoYouSpeak teachers qualified?

Yes, all our teachers are qualified.

All our teachers are native speakers of English, are DoYouSpeak qualified and have experience teaching English as a second language - ESL. Would one to one lessons or small group lessons be best for me?

One to one lessons

Our one to one lessons are intensive half hour or one hour classes with your own native English-speaking teacher. These lessons focus on you and exactly how you want to improve your English. You may want to improve your pronunciation, increase your English vocabulary, prepare for an interview or exam, or increase your confidence when speaking and listening to English - the focus of the English lesson is up to you.

During your lessons you will be doing a lot of speaking and it will involve a lot of concentration and learning by you. We find that students learn faster in one to one lessons for two reasons: firstly the teacher is able to focus on exactly what the individual student is wanting to learn and needs to improve, plus the individual student spends more time speaking in English.

You decide the time and day of each lesson and how often - once a week, twice a week or more - it's up to you.

Small group lessons

Our small group lessons are one hour lessons for 2-4 students with a native English-speaking teacher. Everyone speaks and listens in English and learns from each other. We keep our groups very small so each student has plenty of opportunity to speak during the lesson.

You decide the time and day of each lesson and how often - once a week, twice a week or more - it's up to you. You can learn with the same group of international friends each week.

Our small group lessons cost less than the one to one lessons and many students are more comfortable being in a group rather than being the sole focus of the teacher. However, please note that our group lessons are not yet available for beginners.

What computer equipment do I need?

Hardware:

  • any reasonable personal computer (PC or Mac), and either
  • any landline telephone, or if you wish to use Skype,
  • a headset containing earphone(s) and a microphone (external speakers and microphone can be used but a headset is preferable as it minimises feedback)
Internet connection:
  • any broadband service, ideally 0.5Mbps or faster
Software:
  • Internet browser: Internet Explorer 6 or above, Firefox 1.5 or above (support for Safari 1.2 or above and Opera 1.8 or above coming soon).
  • The latest Flash plugin (also free) - you can download it free from the Adobe website.

You may also want to use Skype (the free voice call software) which you can download it free from the Skype website.

Is DoYouSpeak right for me?

DoYouSpeak is all about helping you to speak and understand English. We do not focus on written material with a lot of reading comprehension, nor do we focus on teaching you a lot of grammar.

First we assess your level of English and then focus on improving your speaking skills by using our interactive Online Classroom and trained English teachers. You learn to speak and understand English by speaking with other students and your teacher, or one to one with your teacher. So if you want to improve your spoken English then DoYouSpeak is for you!

How do I book lessons?

It's easy. If you haven't already, sign up for a trial lesson. When you do, we will create an account for you. Then after your trial lesson, you log in at any time to your account and select the link on the right column of your account home page. This will take you though to the booking page where you can select the type of lessons and book lessons in blocks of 10, 20 or 40.

What do I do after I have scheduled a lesson?

Before each lesson we send you an email reminder of the lesson time and where to find help.

Please be ready at your computer and logged in at DoYouSpeak 5 – 15 minutes before each lesson starts

If you are using Skype rather than a landline telephone for your lesson, please ensure your headset is working correctly so you will be able to hear the teacher and they will hear you.

If you are not a regular Skype user it is a good idea to use the Skype test call service before each lesson just to check that everything is working.

For a Skype test call, click on this icon at any time: Skype Test Call!
